In the past eighteen months, roughly a third of large enterprises have appointed a dedicated AI executive. The titles vary — Chief AI Officer, Head of AI, VP of Applied Intelligence — and so do the job descriptions. That variety is exactly the problem.

Three versions of the same title

In practice, the role tends to fall into one of three shapes. Some are builders, running a central team that develops models and platforms. Some are orchestrators, owning strategy and governance while business units build. And some are evangelists, tasked mainly with education and adoption.

Each can work. Trouble starts when the organisation expects one shape and hires another.

“The first question isn't who to hire. It's which decisions this person will actually own.”

Where it collides with the CIO

The most common friction point is infrastructure. An AI leader who controls the roadmap but not the data platform, security model or cloud budget can find themselves negotiating for every resource they need.

The partnerships that work tend to draw a clear line: the CIO owns the platforms, data foundations and operational risk; the AI leader owns use-case prioritisation, model lifecycle and business value.

Fad or fixture?

History offers a clue. Chief Digital Officers proliferated in the 2010s, and many of those roles were later folded back into the CIO's remit once digital became simply how the business worked.

AI may follow the same path. But for the next few years, while organisations are still building the capability, a dedicated leader with a clear mandate is proving more useful than not. The title may be temporary. The work it represents is not.
